The focus of marriage and family therapy is on helping the family unit to heal relationships and function as a cohesive whole. Each family is different and the therapist works to help families establish and maintain healthy boundaries and roles. Effective communication and conflict-resolution skills are learned and practiced in sessions. Parenting skills may also be offered.

Marriage and Family Therapy

Art therapy allows clients to use the creative process to express their internal experiences. Different mediums are used including, drawing, painting, and sculpting. Art interventions can be used in conjunction with CBT and mindfulness based therapies to treat a variety of mental health concerns. Art therapy is appropriate for all ages and allows expression that doesn't rely so heavily on verbal communication.

Art Therapy

In sandtray therapy, clients create a symbolic representation of their inner experiences by building a world in the sandtray. This world, as a reflection of the client's life and inner being, allows for the opportunity to resolve conflicts, process emotions, and remove obstacles. This modality can also be used in conjunction with CBT and mindfulness approaches. Sandtray therapy is appropriate for all ages.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy primarily designed for children, utilizing play as a medium for communication and expression. In this therapeutic approach, children use toys, games, art, and other forms of play to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. The therapist observes and interacts with the child during play sessions, helping them process emotions, develop problem-solving skills, and work through any challenges they may be facing.

Play therapy is particularly effective for children who may have difficulty expressing themselves verbally or who have experienced trauma.

Our Services

TF-CBT utilizes the same
theoretical basis as CBT with an
added exposure component to
help clients who have
experienced a trauma to process
and make meaning out of their
experience. Trauma changes the
way the brain processes
information and TF-CBT works to
gradually rewire the neural
circuitry. TF-CBT is used to help
people with PTSD, victims of
abuse, or people who have
undergone any other type of
trauma. It is appropriate for
people aged 10 and up.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

(CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a
widely used therapeutic approach that
focuses on understanding the
relationship between thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors. It aims to help
individuals identify and change
negative thought patterns and
behaviors that contribute to emotional
distress or unwanted outcomes. CBT is
typically time-limited, structured, and
goal-oriented, with techniques such as
cognitive restructuring, behavioral
experiments, and problem-solving
strategies used to facilitate change.

Mindfulness based therapies include Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction, Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy, and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy.
These approaches are similar to CBT but incorporate an
attitude of acceptance and awareness that is derived
from ancient meditation practices.
The focus is on
turning toward life and becoming more present in the
moment.
Many times we are operating on autopilot and
are not fully engaged with our world.
This can become a
habit that allows for unhelpful patterns to take shape
without our realizing what is happening.
Mindfulness
practice helps people become aware of how their
"autopilot" mode may be working against them and how
they can achieve well-being.

Mindfulness based therapies can be provided to an
individual, couple, or family and is appropriate for people
aged 8 and up.
Research has demonstrated its
effectiveness in treating anxiety, depression, insomnia,
eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Our Story

Friends and colleagues, Loreli Leos and Allison Davis often talked about “some
day” creating a counseling environment that was warm, inviting and felt like
home for both the client and therapist. They wanted to get away from the cold
clinical settings, “assembly line” approaches and the revolving door of over-
worked therapist forced to meet weekly “quotas”. In 2013 they decided that day
had come. Together they created New Dawn Psychotherapy with this mission;

To provide individualized, compassionate counseling services based on the
highest standard of care. We believe counseling is a journey of self-
discovery and see our role as facilitating in this process so that our clients
can achieve their goals and reach their potentials.

Ten years later, the mission is just as important as it was on day one.

What to Expect

At New Dawn you will not be “assigned” a therapist.

You chose the therapist that best meets your needs.

You will not meet with a therapist that is “passing through”.

Your therapist is a member of a team that has been working together for
over 15 years.

You will not meet with a student or intern. Your therapist is an
experienced LicensedProfessional Counselor

We believe that counseling is a healing process that takes place within a therapeutic relationship.

The first session consists of an evaluation to determine the focus of counseling and the modality that is the best fit for the person.

In the second session, goals are set for the counseling relationship.

We see the counseling relationship as a partnership and expect our clients to be active and involved in the process.
